Even as the state government has waived off the penalty for delay in filing simplified Goods-and-Services-Tax (GST) return for July, commissioner of commercial taxes, Dipak M Bandekar, has confirmed that there is indeed a penalty of Rs 200 per day for not filing August simplified GST return.
Last week, the state government had waived off the penalty for dealers, who have not filed GST return for July in the form ‘GSTR-3B'.
Bandekar said, "There is no penalty for late filing July GST return. However, the late payment of GST for July will still attract 18% per annum interest. Around 5,340 dealers in Goa have still not filed July GST return."
The way GST system works is such that in case a dealer has not filed return for July, he will not be able to file return for August either. Even when there is no penalty for July, dealers will not be able to file August GST return, if they haven't filed July GST return. Moreover, not filing August GST return will attract penalty and interest both.
The last date to file simplified July GST return was August 28. And, the last date to file simplified August GST return was September 20.
Bandekar further said, "Around 11,700 dealers of total 22,000 dealers have not filed August GST return. They will have to pay penalty at the rate of Rs 200 per day."
